Pop Pop has always been Georgia’s hero.

Now, it’s her turn to be a hero, too.

On a cozy winter day at his memory care home, Georgia and Pop Pop relive some of their favorite memories together and create new ones. But when Pop Pop forgets something important, Georgia discovers her chance to be a hero, too.

Pop Pop Is My Hero is thoughtfully written to help families navigate conversations about dementia, Alzheimer’s, and other forms of memory loss with care and compassion. Offering encouragement to caregivers and children alike, this heartfelt, hope-filled tale honors the past, embraces the present, and reminds readers that love can be even stronger than memory.

The heart behind the story.

The title of this book is no exaggeration. My Pop Pop truly was my hero growing up, and many of the moments woven into the story are a part of my life.

A few years ago, when my Pop Pop began losing his memory due to dementia, I wanted something meaningful to come out of it. After finding an essay I wrote in elementary school titled “Pop Pop Is My Hero,” I knew I wanted my next book to help children navigate their loved ones—their heroes, if you will—no longer remembering them.

Whether you are a caregiver to someone with memory loss or you’re simply drawn to the story of a little girl who adores her grandfather, I hope this book serves as a reminder that love isn’t limited to memory and that life isn’t defined by what we can remember but rather by those we get to experience it with.
