Today is Silent Saturday, the day between Jesus’s death and resurrection when the crowds were silent. The disciples were silent. The world was silent. Even God was silent. All hope was seemingly lost.
Instead of reading a devotional, below is a guided prayer that speaks to just that – the feeling of hope being lost when really, just maybe, perhaps, hope is just about to dawn again. Thank you for being a part of this devotional series, and I pray you have a blessed Easter.
A Prayer for When All Hope Seems Lost
God, we are called to be a people of hope—
But today, we don’t feel it.
Today, we see only brokenness,
Only grief,
Only death.
Today, we mourn, we weep,
We question if you’re still there,
If you still care.
But like first light in the morning
Or the first laugh after mourning,
Help us remember that breakthrough is near,
Miracles are in the works,
And the silence of today
Is not indefinite.
God, when all hope seems lost,
Will you remind us?
That you are at work in the dark;
That you do not make mistakes;
That you are surprised by nothing;
And that you have a purpose in all things.
May hope be our anchor in rough waters,
Our light in the darkness,
Our strength in the fight,
Our reason to keep going.
Speak tenderly to our hearts today, Lord,
Reassuring us, it won’t always be this way.
When all hope seems lost,
May we remember the cross.
May we lift our gazes upward to heaven.
And may we breathe in the relief:
Sunday is coming.
